Gladiator reliefs
Aphrodisias has a large collection of gladiator reliefs (over 40). These are not monuments to the trained fighters themselves but come probably from the tombs of entrepreneurs who owned gladiator and beast-hunter ‘schools’ or tombs of patrons, high priests, who paid for the Roman-style games put on in the city in honour of the emperors. Most have been found in secondary contexts and re-used in the later fourth century city walls.
