Funerary monuments were a major business for the local marble workshops. Tomb buildings could carry portraits statues and busts and reliefs (for example, the gladiator reliefs). More modest burials were marked by stelai. Aphrodisias preserves an interesting selection of such stelai which were set up for members of the working-class (a supervisor of the linen workers and a tavern keeper are commemorated) and their children. Many of these monuments were re-used as building material in the later fourth century AD city walls.
